An Evening with Jenn Pelly

  • The Dionysus Disco (The 'Sco) 135 West Lorain Street Oberlin, OH, 44074 United States (map)

WOBC-FM + SOPHIE KEMP PRESENT: An evening with Pitchfork's Jenn Pelly

This talk at Oberlin will be a Q&A Lecture about Jenn Pelly's recent book on the Raincoats, as well as her work as a music journalist.

Jenn Pelly is a Contributing Editor at Pitchfork and author of a 33 1/3 book on The Raincoats. Her writing has appeared in Rolling Stone, SPIN, The Village Voice, The Wire, Teen Vogue, and Nylon. She is a co-curator of Basilica Soundscape 2017 and has organized music events at MoMA PS1, Judson Church, and Silent Barn. She lives in New York.

From her book:
"The Raincoats is a beginning, but it is also a record about beginnings. In its songs you hear a cultural genesis story. The Raincoats were a group of women who were, in part, just learning to play their instruments, but their debut album also coincides with the start of a whole artistic sensibility, one of fearless and knowing amateurism. These overcast songs are charged with the feeling of newness that comes with realizing you are not what you expected. It is the sound of finding things buried inside you that you did not know were there. It is the sound of realities expanding note by note, of accepting punk’s dare. It is the sound of people believing in themselves."
